Socorro R. Castaniero

Socorro Ruiz Castaniero, born on May 6, 1931, in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico. The youngest of 19 children born to Francesca Ruiz Rodriguez Saenz and Donaciano Ruiz Oliva, Socorro was a beacon of strength and courage. On August 29, 2023, at the age of 92, she peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.

In 1949, Socorro married her childhood sweetheart, Manuel Veloz Castaniero. Determined to provide a better life for their family, Socorro valiantly immigrated to the United States alone with four children to join Manuel in Oxnard, CA. She held various jobs, including working as a housekeeper in Malibu, assisting at the United Farm Workers’ local office and store, and later retiring from the “Chileria” in 1994. Throughout her working life, Socorro built lifelong friendships wherever she went.

Upon settling in Oxnard, Socorro became an active member of her faith community. She served as a dedicated member of Las Guadalupanas and established the Marriage Formation Preparation Group at Guadalupe Church. Later, she committed to practice her faith at Mary Star of the Sea Church, where she served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, taught catechism, organized Las Posadas, and presided over Las Guadalupanas and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. With unconditional love, Socorro instilled the values of hard work, humanity, and service in everyone she met, believing that these principles could change the world one person at a time.

Socorro was renowned for her resilience and her devoted faith. She was a pillar of strength for all who knew her, offering not only her delicious cooking but also her prayers to those in need. She was a steadfast friend and confidant, always setting clear boundaries while building deep connections. Socorro's children carry her legacy, enriched with lessons of respect, compassion, perseverance, financial wisdom, and the pursuit of excellence. She often reminded them in Spanish, “Los huevónes siempre trabajan doble” (“The lazy take twice as long to get the same thing done”) and “Los que andan muerto de hambre por el dinero nunca tendrán dinero” (“Those who hunger for money will never have money”).

Socorro leaves behind a loving family, including her six children: Alfred (wife Martha), Ben (wife Kari), Linda (husband Louie), Manuel (wife Naomi), Cruz (husband Victor), Rick (fiancée Melissa), many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, and extended family members.
