Nancy Slover Stehle, of Oxnard, CA, died unexpectedly on Aug 29, 2023. She was 86 years old. Her family is deeply saddened by her death. She was a long-term resident of Oxnard living there twice, the first time in the 1960-70s and again since 1996.
Nancy was born to Anne (Muggy) and William (Bill) Slover on April 27, 1937 in Elgin, IL and raised in Manchester, CT. An independent and vibrant personality from the beginning, Nancy was an excellent student, graduated from Manchester High School and immediately went on to study geology at Wellesley College.
After graduating from Wellesley, she moved to Oxnard and began a career in environmental management at Naval Base Port Hueneme as a civilian for the Department of the Navy, where she helped the Navy start its first nationwide recycling program. Shortly after beginning her career, she met her husband Carl Stehle, Jr., a fellow geologist, marrying on Aug 4, 1962. They had no children.
Nancy retired after 30+ years with the Navy. She enjoyed many outdoor activities and continued hiking and camping into her early 80s. She lived in Washington, D.C. and Boulder, CO but returned to Oxnard after retirement to be near friends. She loved traveling to all parts of the world but her favorite activity was singing in the Santa Clara Church choir, which she did for decades. She was an active member of The Rotary Club and also volunteered her time with Habitat for Humanity and The ReStore, serving as Executive Director and on the local board of trustees.
She is survived by her brother William P. Slover, Jr.; cousins MaryAnne , Penny and Diana; nieces Catherine Millington and Cheryl Slover-Linett; nephews Gary Phoenix, Gregory Slover and David Slover and many loving grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her older sister Betsy Phoenix. She was grateful to her “adopted” family, the Espinosas, for the care and company they provided her in recent years.
A funeral mass and memorial service are still being planned at this time. If you’d like to honor her legacy, please contribute to the Anne “Muggy” and William “Paw” Slover Fund at Ventura County Community Foundation (https://vccf.org/).
