Larry Mercado Rigonan Obituary

Larry Thor Mercado Rigonan, 75 years of age, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at his residence in Ventura, California.

He was born on January 26, 1948, in Batac, Ilocos Norte, Philippines to the late Pedro Rigonan and the late Dolores Invencion.  He was the third child of five children.  Two preceded him in death.   Larry attended Palongpong Elementary School and graduated from Eureka High School in Batac City where he achieved the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel in Preparatory Military Training. Larry frequently spent time at the nearby family village estate in Busel and lived in Mindanao for a few of his formative years.

Larry married his late beloved wife, Georgina, in 1973 and three children were born from this union. The family lived in Guam for a period before settling in Oxnard, California in 1986.  Throughout his life, Larry worked various jobs, to support his family, in the airline, hotel, fitness industries and worked for a defense contract company before retirement.

Although he had an ailing heart, he had a tremendous heart of gold.  He immensely loved his wife, children, and grandchildren especially.  Larry was a loyal husband, devoted father, and doting grandfather.  Not only did Larry love his immediate family but he kept his family in the Philippines close to his heart.

Larry was a very sweet, humble, gentle, quiet, selfless, and also generous man.  He had a relentless desire to give and help family in need.  Although Larry was naturally a quiet man, his generous actions were piercingly loud. He made a positive impact on the lives of family but did so quietly and without the need of recognition. It brought joy to his heart to give to his family in need in the Philippines whether it be through financial assistance or by sending care packages.

For many years, Larry would fill-up and send large Balikbayan boxes (parcel boxes or care packages) to family in the Philippines.  Toward the end of his life, he would spend most of his time thrifting at Goodwill browsing and shopping for items he could send to relatives for personal use or to sell at the market to earn extra money.  Even as his health declined,  he continued to send boxes out.  He never forgot where he came from, the struggles he had to overcome and always kept in touch with his family and friends in the Philippines.  He stayed true to his roots.

Larry was also very multi-faceted; having many interests, talents and skills. He was an incredible singer with a warm and rounded tone.  He loved music.  He was an artist who drew very well.  He was an amazing cook, who frequently cooked for large parties.  He was smart and always had creative solutions to any problem and had many practical hacks. He attended college to study auto mechanics, he knew how to weld, install gates, paint cars.  He was athletic.  He played in volleyball tournaments in high school.  He loved to ride his bike and enjoyed fishing.  Larry had a great sense of humor and made family and friends laugh.

Larry leaves, to cherish his loving memory, his children Michael V. Rigonan, Larraine R. (Philip Cowen), Grace R. (Arvin Darilag); four grandchildren Marc R. Cowen, Audrey R. Cowen, August R. Darilag and Maya R. Darilag; brother Rodolfo Rigonan, sister Estrelita Duca and cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by wife, Georgina 12/2022; Nestor Rigonan 4/2023 Abelardo Invencion 12/2016; Father Pedro Rigonan 8/2004 and Mother Dolores Mercado Invention 6/2002.
