Doris H. Hunt, 97, passed away on August 6th, at her home in Camarillo, California. She was surrounded by her family and was listening to a replay of the 1991 Superbowl game when the New Jersey Giants beat the Buffalo Bill’s.
Doris was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on January 28, 1926, to Dyle P. Hoskin Sr. and Virginia Pace Hoskin. She grew up in East Rutherford, New Jersey during the Great Depression with her two sisters Alice Barton and Lillian Brown and her beloved brothers Dyle P. Hoskin, Jr, Donald Hoskin and David Hoskin who always called her “Gal”. Her family loved music and sports, especially baseball and football.
The outbreak of World War II darkened Doris’ high school years as many of her classmates were drafted into the service including her brother Dyle. When high school and the war were over, Doris went to work for US Rubber as a bookkeeper and clerk. She also helped in the office of the growing family business, East Rutherford Steel Erectors. In her small community it became the talk of the town and was even in the local paper when Doris was hired by TWA as an airline stewardess.
A few years later, on a double date, she met her husband of 51 years Bryce Hunt, a pilot for TWA. They were married six months later at which time Doris’ wings were clipped as stewardesses were not allowed to be married at that time. They built their first home in Pines Lake, New Jersey. Several years later they moved to Malibu, Ca and later to Camarillo, CA where Doris has made her home for the past 56 years.
Doris was active with her church as well as the PTA and Girl Scouts. She volunteered at the Christian’s Acting Together thrift store where she was one of their best customers. She was a member of the Eastern Star’s. She loved bowling, needlework, reading, crafts, attending the theatre, camping, shopping and making a beautiful home for her family. She also loved to travel, and she and Bryce had many adventures as they traveled the world together.
Doris was an avid football fan cheering and yelling at the TV each Sunday. She was devoted to her favorite team the “New Jersey” Giants as she referred to them because, after all, they played in her hometown.
Doris was a devoted mother, grand-mother and great-grandmother. She never missed an event when the children were involved and they all have happy memories of summer days at grandma’s pool where they would swim, play cards and eat Grandma’s famous peanut butter and honey sandwiches and milk with Ovaltine.
She is survived by her children Robin Estes (James), Debra Villa (Raul), Steven Hunt (Rittie) and Patricia Foeller (William), her grandchildren Richard Cousino, Brian Cousino, Ashleigh Villa and Allison Villa and her great-grandchildren Lilyana, Richard (RJ), Nicholas, Kristian, Lisette and Sean as well as many nieces and nephews.
Doris had a sparkle. She had a smile for everyone, a mischievous sense of humor and a competitive spirit. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, August 19 at 11:00am at the United Methodist Church 291 Anacapa Dr. Camarillo, Ca 93010. Reception will immediately follow in Brooks Hall. The family requests donations in her honor to the Camarillo United Methodist Church, in lieu of flowers.
