Angel Benjamin Menes

Angel Menes Obituary

Angel was born in Wilmington, California.  He Graduated from Banning High School in 1960.  He joined the Air Force in 1961 and was stationed at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey.  From an early age Angel knew we wanted to change lives in a classroom so when he was accepted into the Teacher Core Program at the University of Southern California it began his lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. USC is where he found his passion for education.

Angel moved to Ventura County in 1971 and did his teacher training in Santa Paula.  In 1973 he was hired at Haydock Jr. High School in Oxnard where he could be found every day during his lunch period playing basketball with his students, He loved connecting with his students in the classroom and on the court. He was a proud Chicano to his students in the ESL program.  For many years he was the club advisor for MECHA and served as the President to the AMAE (Association of Mexican American Educators) where he was committed to making a difference for students. Angel was honored as Educator of the Year for the 1992-1993 school year and spent his final years teaching at Frank Middle School and retired from the Oxnard Union School District after 32 years of dedicated service.

Angel is survived by his daughter, Juanita Carter and her Husband Tim.  His Son’s Angel Menes and Michael Menes. Grandchildren Jon Kimmel, Nicole Kimmel, Ben Carter, Travis Turner, Nicholas Menes, Michael Menes, and Cassidy Jarvi – Wallace. Great Grand Children, Jaxon Kimmel, Arion Standford-Menes, and Vaylence Abrams.  Sisters Patrcia Reyes, Angela O’Neil and Laura Figura. He is predeceased by his Wife Delia, His Mother Angela Munoz and Father Cleo Menes.  Sister Nellie and all of his brothers Cleo, Patricio, Bobby, Bernard, Nellie and Francesca.

Angel was a proud alumnus of USC and never missed a football game.  Saturday’s game day will never feel the same.  He was also a faithful Lakers Fan and a boxing fan enthusiast. He especially loved traveling and music.

A mass will be held at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Camarillo at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 21, 2024.  A Celebration of Angels’ Life will be held immediately following the service at Las Posas Greens Community Center.
